Common Problems

My engine no longer starts!

If the engine runs fine one second, and no longer starts the next, a common cause is a defective ignition module (mounted inside the distributor). Always replace with an AC/Delco part, do not use OEM!

My engine dies if I come to a stop.

The Automatic tranny contains a so-called "TCC-Solenoid", which actuates something that works like a clutch in a manual transmission. This solenoid may get stuck when warm, and this stalls the engine. The only cure is replacement of the solenoid. Temporarily you can disconnect the blue, 4-pin connector on the transmission and let the tranny cool off. When the tranny has cooled off, you can continue your ride without fear of the problem coming again, but this "fix" causes the tranny to heat up more, and fuel economy goes down. The tranny heatup may damage the tranny, so this is only an emergency solution!

My engine overheats, what am I supposed to do?

The temperature gauge may move up to the center position without the need to worry. If you want to lower the temperature when stuck in a traffic jam, you can turn on the A/C, which turns on the radiator fan. You can also set the heater and fan to maximum to draw heat from the system. This can quickly bring the temperature down to the normal range.

One (or both) headlights do not open/close or the motor runs continuously.

Next to the headlight is a small one or two pin connector. Disconnect it, and the headlight will no longer close, and you can open the headlight by spinning the motor manually. Caution: the headlight motor may start running suddenly, disconnect battery to prevent personal injury!

My steering wheel is loose and moves in all directions!

Inside the steering column are 4 Torx-Bolts tightening the tilt mechanism. To repair this, unfortunately the steering column must be disassembled, and the bolts tightened. Repair as soon as possible!

My engine runs unevenly, there is a lack of power.

A common cause are ignition problems, caused by defective ignition wires, worn or dirty spark plugs, or water in the distributor. Hairline cracks in the distributor cap, rotor or a bad tach filter can also be the cause.

My engine is making funny noises

If you suspect engine damage, turn off the engine immediately! If you continue driving with engine damage, you are endangering yourself and others, and risk a blown engine, engine fire, etc. Call the autoclub and have your car towed.

The engine is not running on all cylinders.

This can be caused by various issues, starting with a bad ignition wire/spark plug, to a hole in a piston, defective Valve/Lifter or rocker arm. In any case, don't continue your trip, even if the engine still produces enough power, because (especially on the V6) the unignited fuel may wash the oil off of the cylinder wall and cause the engine to seize up!
