Six Subaru SVX Videos on One DVD

DVD Main Menu

The DVD case inserts makes it look like it was created by Subaru

Overview: This DVD is created from six videos made by Subaru on the Subaru SVX. I have accumulated these videos over the last four years paying well over $100 for all of them. Now is your chance to get all 6 videos--2 hours of SVX heaven--for one low price in the simplicity of DVD format. Chapters have been defined within each video to make it easy to jump ahead to the section you want to watch. The DVD comes in a case with cover art designed to emulate the look of the original materials. Inside is a table of contents with chapter headings. The DVD's main menu is pictured at left.

Price/Shipping: The price is $16 plus $4 shipping within the US and Canada. To ship anywhere else in the world, add $4 more to shipping--for a total of $8 in shipping.

Compatibility: This is a "region-free" DVD so DVD players around the world will play it regardless of the region the DVD player is made for. The disc is specifically a DVD-R disc. About 95% of today's DVD players and computer DVD drives will play the DVD-R format. If you are unsure if your DVD player will play a DVD-R, check the manual or the manufacturer's website for compatibilty.

NOTE: Unless you tell me otherwise, I will send you the DVD is in NTSC video format (the TV standard for the US, Canada, Japan, and parts of South America). I can send you a PAL version of the DVD (for those in most parts of Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, and South America), just make sure you mention you want PAL format to me when you buy the DVD. SECAM format is beyond my abilities...sorry France, Mongolia, Hungary, Niger, and the rest.

Quality: Personally, I think this DVD looks great! But I'm not a videophile who buys the latest equipment always searching for the ultimate in quality. So, if you are a quality freak, keep in mind that, although this is a DVD, the material used to create it was originally in VHS videotape format. The videos are the original tapes released by Subaru--no copies. Most of the footage used to create the videos was shot originally in video format (not film) so it has an amateurish look to it. And when they mass produced the tapes, they didn't use the best quality media available. The quality issue is mostly noticeable in the Sales Training video where the audio track level goes up and down a few times throughout the video.

Quotes from those who have purchased the DVD:

"Besides the car, it's been my greatest purchase!"

"It looks like a store-bought DVD. The case, insert, and DVD itself are all professionally done. Nice menu screen, too. Awesome work!"

"Made me love the car 10 times more."

"Woo-hoo!! I think I'll bring the DVD player into the car and enjoy it right!"

"I am very impressed, many thanks for doing a first class job, not only the recording itself but the packaging and the disc art as well!"

"Made me want to run right out and buy an SVX...and I already have mine in the garage!"

"Every SVX enthusiast needs one of these DVDs!"

Summaries of Each Video

Title:
Subaru SVX: Our New Look Subaru
Running Time:
5 minutes
Synopsis:
This is a 5 minute advertisement video promoting the brand new SVX. It was mailed to a few loyal Subaru owners and potential SVX buyers. It has some nice footage of the SVX in sporty driving situations and rotating around in a studio. There are also shots of the SVX with emphasis on the people driving them like with a family at home; driven by a photographer to a model photoshoot; parked at the beach with a couple walking in the sand; driven by a mother taking her baby for a picnic in the park; and a woman wearing a jacket with huge circa-1990 shoulder pads driving her SVX from the mall while two teens on bicycles check her car out. Oh yes, and there's a shot of a man driving his SVX to a candle-lit dinner date at the top of a parking deck. Subaru must have been doing their homework because I've done all of these things in my SVX...including the jacket with the shoulder pads!
Title:
1992 Subaru SVX Owner's Information Videotape
Running Time:
28 minutes
Synopsis:
This video came in the glove compartment of every new 1992 SVX. It is essentially an owner's manual on tape. With so few changes in the SVX between 1992 and 1997, most of this video is applicable to all years of the SVX. Contents includes: Before Driving, Starting and Operating, Instruments and Controls, Anti-Lock Braking System/All-Wheel Drive, Climate Control, Stereo Components, Standard and Optional Features, and Maintenance Procedures. Memorable performances by "woman with green pants and shoes" and "man with way too much make-up on."
Title:
1996 Subaru SVX Sales Training Video
Running Time:
17 minutes
Synopsis:
In order for Subaru sales staff to close a deal on the lot, they needed to know some facts about the SVX, its abilities, and its competition. This video shows the features of the SVX, some technical highlights, and how it compares to other vehicles--specifically the Nissan 300ZX and the Mitsubishi 3000 GT. The Nissan and the Mitsubishi were both faster than the SVX so they had to do some quick thinking as to how they were going to make the SVX look good. The answer? Cover the track with tons of water and see how they accelerate. Because the SVX had AWD, it didn't slip and slide. I don't know if I could have pitched that with a straight face to customers: "If you're at a red light and a 300ZX pulls up next to you, challenge him to a race and you'll win. Oh, did I mention it has to be pouring rain when you challenge him?"
Title:
Subaru SVX Technical Overview
Running Time:
21 minutes
Synopsis:
This is a great, bumper-to-bumper summary of the SVX from a lightly technical perspective. It is the first of three videos made in late 1991 for the purpose of training Subaru service personnel on the all-new SVX. It starts by acquainting viewers with the SVX standard features like the engine, transmission, ABS system, air bag, climate control, and adjustable steering wheel. Then it talks about the touring package options such as the sunroof, vehicle speed sensitive power steering, heated mirrors, power seats, leather interior, CD player, and spoiler. Rated "R" for language and graphic violence.
Title:
Subaru SVX Pre-Delivery Inspection
Running Time:
21 minutes
Synopsis:
This is the second of three videos made in late 1991 for the purpose of training Subaru service personnel on the all-new SVX. This video tells service technicians how to properly perform the SVX PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection). It includes information on the inspection before the road test (add windshield fluid, remove wiper protectors, check horn, windows, sunroof, all lights, lighter, seats, radio, tires, etc.). Then there are points to check while on the road test (check idle, brakes, transmission, steering, cruise control, radio reception, etc.). And finally, the inspections that need to be performed after the road test (check fluid levels, leak checks, fit and finish, glass alignment, headlight alignment, etc.). Nominated for three academy awards including best soundtrack!
Title:
Subaru SVX Zexel Climate Control System
Running Time:
25 minutes
Synopsis:
This is the third video in the SVX Service Technician trilogy. After the critically acclaimed success of the first two videos, it had quite a reputation to live up to. Unfortunately it falls flat as this video suffers from stale dialog and poor performances. Nonetheless, it discusses the heating and air conditioning system on the SVX: its similarities to other Subaru systems and its differences. The description of the Auto Control Unit (ACU) is very detailed. The ACU evaluates environmental input and decides on the proper output for the HVAC system. It concludes with an overview on how to properly troubleshoot and diagnose HVAC problems using flow charts.
